Dentists Warn Patients of the Dangers of Not Maintaining the Smile

There’s more to looking after your teeth than brushing and flossing and a dental clinic has issued its top tips for looking after that smile.

Singer Dental has called on people to take periodontal maintenance more seriously as studies have shown that regular appointments are more likely to protect people from serious dental problems in the future.

The US Centers for Disease Control have found that 42% of adults aged 30 and over and 70% of adults aged 65 and over have some sort of periodontal disease and it is slightly more common in men than in women. The problems are widespread, but many periodontal issues, if caught early enough, are preventable.

A periodontal appointment involves cleaning and polishing the teeth to remove stains. Dentists also remove plaque and tartar that builds up at the surface of the tooth’s root. An appointment might also involve fluoride treatment, bad breath control and gum disease treatment, dependent on what each individual needs. Patients are advised to use the service from two to four times a year to maintain good oral health.

Dentists will help with more serious issues like bad breath control. This is not just a sign that someone is not brushing or flossing their teeth enough or eating too much garlic, it could be a sign of an underlying problem. Bad breath, or halitosis, can be a sign of oral thrush, periodontal disease or tooth decay. Regular periodontal maintenance sessions will be able to diagnose this and help patients to get treatment and get rid of the bad odors.

Bleeding of the gums, swelling and redness in the mouth is called gingivitis. It is a mild form of gum disease. Dentists at Singer Dental said that if they can catch the problem at this stage, then it is easily treated.

If it is not treated early enough, then gums can start to recede and it can lead to bone or tooth loss.

A spokesman at Singer Dental said: “This is why periodontal maintenance is so important. If patients are coming back to see us on a regular basis, then we can help to keep on top of small problems before they lead into serious oral health conditions.

“Regular brushing and flossing of teeth can really help to slow down the formation of calculus, but gum disease can recur two to four months after a professional clean, so it is important to keep regular periodontal appointments.”
