Generally speaking, LED light sources can be simply divided into two categories: individual LED diode light sources or LED diode light sources with resistors. In applications, sometimes LED light sources are designed as a module containing a DC-DC converter, and such complex modules are not within the scope of this article’s discussion.
If the LED light source or module is a separate LED diode itself, the common dimming method is to adjust the amplitude of the LED input current. Therefore, the selection of LED driver power should refer to this characteristic. LED light strips are widely used as resistors with LED diodes connected in series, so the voltage is relatively stable. Therefore, users can use any commercially available constant voltage power supply to drive LED light strips.
The best LED strip dimming solution is to use the output pulse width modulation PWM dimming function to solve common deadtravel dimming problems. The output brightness relies on the load cycle of the dimming signal to achieve dimming changes that reduce brightness. The important parameters for selecting the driving power supply are dimming analysis and the frequency of output pulse width modulation PWM.
The minimum dimming ability should be as low as 0.1% to achieve an 8-bit dimming resolution to meet all LED light strip dimming applications. The output pulse width modulation PWM frequency should be as high as possible to prevent light flickering problems, According to relevant technical research literature, it is recommended to have a frequency at least higher than 1.25kHz to reduce visible ghost flicker to the human eye.
