Ethylene Oxide is a colorless, flammable gas or liquid, produced by catalytically reacting ethylene and oxygen using silver as a catalyst. It is mainly used for the production of ethylene glycol, ethoxylates, ethanolamines, and glycol ether among others. It is being widely used as a sterilant in medical devices and equipment and as a fumigant in spices. The product finds use in numerous applications which includes medical devices, cosmetics, solvents, detergents, antifreeze, textiles, and food & beverages.
For instance, in November 2018, Clariant proposed to expand ethylene oxide capacity at its plant in Gendorf, Germany. Also, in July 2018, BASF SE proposed to expand ethylene oxide capacity expansion at its verbund site in Antwerp, Belgium.
