After a four-year period of a steady decline, total imports of provitamins and vitamins in the EU Member States surged rapidly, reaching 2,023 million EUR in 2015. Data concerning the EU trade with non-EU countries shows that the EU remains a net importer of provitamins and vitamins.
Germany (20%), France (16%), and the Netherlands (12%) were the largest provitamin and vitamin importers among the EU Member States, together comprising 48% of total imports. The share of the Netherlands (-14 percentage points) illustrated negative dynamics, while France’s (+3 percentage points) and Germany’s (+2 percentage points) shares increased from 2007 to 2015.
Over the recent years, extra-EU imports have comprised about 46% of total provitamin and vitamin imports. In 2015, extra-EU imports reached 940 million EUR, which was 11% more than the year before.
Despite the fluctuations in the last eight years, extra-EU imports amounted to about half of the apparent consumption of provitamins and vitamins in the EU in 2015. The European market is largely dependent on supplies from abroad, especially from China (55 % of extra-EU imports), Switzerland (14%), and the U.S. (10 %). In the medium term, radical changes in the market structure of provitamins and vitamins are not anticipated, with the share of extra-EU imports making up about half of EU’s apparent consumption.
