FireKeepers Championship Kicks off the 2020 Symetra Tour Return

The Official Qualifying Tour of the LPGA Safely Plays Out Despite the Ongoing COVID-19 Pandemic

LONGWOOD, Fla. – August 4, 2020 – The Symetra Tour, Road to the LPGA, officially resumed its 2020 competitive season over the weekend with the FireKeepers Casino Hotel Championship at Battle Creek Country Club in Battle Creek, Mich. This three-day event concluded with Ruixin Liu finishing in first place.

Ending the competition at 13-under par, Liu walked away from the FireKeepers Championship with a $26,250 prize. The three golfers following her lead included:

  • Bailey Tardy, finishing second at 11-under par
  • Janie Jackson, finishing third at 10-under par
  • Gabrielle Shipley, finishing fourth at 9-under par

As golfer’s wrapped up the return event of the Symetra Tour, they also set their sights on the rest of the 2020 competitive season. With only seven legs of the tour remaining — two of which are sponsored by Insurance Office of America (IOA) — competitors, event coordinators, and partners are reeling with both excitement and hope.

“After seeing how things played out at the FireKeepers Championship, I couldn’t be more excited to watch the rest of the tour unfold,” said IOA co-founder John Ritenour. “Golfers have lost a lot of the season, but they haven’t lost focus. They’re all playing at the top of their game.”

After just recently announcing the postponement of the Guardian Championship on July 16, the Symetra Tour continues to monitor public health data as the competitions move forward, hoping to sustain the rest of the roster. Because of the persisting health crisis, up to five cards will be awarded at the close of the season — half of the amount normally available.

The next event on the tour, the Founders Tribute at Longbow, is still set to take place in Mesa, Ariz. August 14-16.
