Five young Black school psychologists from Seton Hall University are creating history. The school psychology field in the United States today is majorly White, partly Latin and only has five percent of Black individuals. Yet in the midst of discrimination, five Black students of Seton Hall University, Naa-Adjorkor Marques, Sherrikah Hayes, Raquan Clinton, Tiffany Jenkins, and Aja Bennett, went against the odds to break boundaries and set the mark for diversity in school psychology.
The education sector in the United States has seen a visible lack of diversity in different critical career fields. Black individuals have, through the centuries, struggled to rise through the ranks due to the lack of opportunities offered to them. Today, there is change, and the accomplishment of these young people displays proof of shifting sands in this sector.
Naa-Adjorkor Marques, Sherrikah Hayes, Raquan Clinton, Tiffany Jenkins, and Aja Bennett showed remarkable promise under the mentorship of professor Dr Thomas Massarelli. Dr Massarelli worked in the area of school psychology with emotionally challenged and neurologically impaired teenagers at the Middlesex County Vocational-Technical Schools. He has served as director of the School Community Psychology Program at Seton Hall University for the past 22 years.
It was under Dr Massarelli’s mentorship that the students achieved their post master’s degree in school psychology. Each alumnus of Seton Hall has an exceptional and heartwarming story of the journey that brought them this far. Their achievements will definitely go down in Black history as inspiration to other young Black ambitious individuals.
Seton Hall University continues to uphold and encourage Black students to achieve their dreams. Students Naa-Adjorkor Marques, Sherrikah Hayes, Raquan Clinton, Tiffany Jenkins, and Aja Bennett will graduate on May 25, 2021.
