You can’t go forcing something if it’s just not right, which is why the band took a 4-year break after battling addiction and alcoholism on and off for years. Band leader, Billie Joe Armstrong, has been living in sobriety for 4 years and has learned a few life lessons along the way. One of which was giving up his compulsive need to outdo himself from one day to the next, which is behavior that contributed greatly to the self-destructive lifestyle he had lived for so long. He was recently quoted in Rolling Stone Magazine saying, “I learned that the hard way. You can’t be enthusiastic for the sake of enthusiasm. You have to get out of trying to outdo and one-up yourself all the time. We had to break that habit because suddenly we weren’t really being ourselves anymore. . . . I was a little burnt out on being in Green day. We needed to stop.”
They are back with a new album Revolution Radio due to be released on October 7, 2016. The band says recording the album in Armstrong’s home studio was easy, but getting there was tough with the band’s bass player, Dirnt’s wife facing breast cancer and a general reluctance to go back to work after an extended honeymoon from Tre’Cool, the drummer. Armstrong’s, ‘break,’ was spent collaborating with other musicians, writing songs for musicals and performing American Idiot on Broadway, but America had gone long enough without new music from its favorite punk rockers, so the trio got to work.
