Hangzhou Seawall Site Museum

Hundreds of years ago, Chinese built seawalls on both sides of the estuary of the Qiantang River, the mother river of Hangzhou, to safeguard the shores from tidal waves. Today, these structures are considered grand and exquisite historical relics.

The Hangzhou Seawall Site Museum was opened to the public on Jan 7, 2020 after three years of construction. The 6,200-square-meter venue is the only museum dedicated to seawall ruins in China.

Besides having a section featuring Qing Dynasty (1644-1911) era seawalls adorned with patterns of fish scales, the museum showcases the historical changes, cultural value, and spiritual symbolism of these structures through a wide range of collections, documents and cultural experience activities.
