The municipal health commission of Hangzhou recently published a report on primary and middle school students’ diet and fitness in 2021, local media reported on May 20.
According to the report, about 15.72 percent of the surveyed students are overweight. The overweight rates of boys and girls are 18.84 percent and 12.43 percent respectively.
About 12.34 percent of the students are obese. The obesity rates of boys and girls are 15.99 percent and 8.51 percent respectively.
Meanwhile, the rate of malnutrition is 6.61 percent and about 8.6 percent of the students show symptoms of anemia.
Local authorities said the conditions were caused by unbalanced diets, fast food, and a lack of outdoor sports.
They suggested that student canteens should reduce the use of gutter oil and flavor enhancers, including soy sauce and monosodium glutamate.
They also encouraged students to spend less than two hours playing video games, spend more than one hour for outdoor sports, and reduce added-sugar intake.
