At Hillsdale Middle School in the Cajon Valley Union School District, administrator wondered how the school would be affected if every teacher and every student had access to a makerspace. With the support of the governing board, the administration came up with a creative vision to build Hillsdale Middle School its very own makerspace!
After plans were drafted for the Hillsdale Makerspace and a foundation was poured, prefabricated building structures were brought in and the Makerspace dreams started coming to life! The room was then filled with storage cubbies and shelves, durable tables and chairs, and of course, an enormous amount of materials and electronics to create. The modern and innovative space gives Hillsdale students access to tools they need to make castles, monuments, race cars, 3D printing, buildings, aqueducts, and so much more.
Having a makerspace is an important aspect of a 21st-century education where students can meet to create, design, share ideas, and learn. Makerspaces can have a variety of resources in them that foster skills in STEM (science, technology, engineering, and math). These rooms can contain crafts, hardware supplies, 3D printers, computers with applications and programs, and anything else that promotes collaboration, critical thinking, and creativity, which are important skills students will use throughout their education, careers, and lives.
The Hillsdale Makerspace gives students a different type of opportunity outside typical classrooms experiences to engage with their learning. As students build and create, they learn what to do when they fail and how to fix problems. These critical thinking skills will benefit the students throughout their lives as they are able to be independent in their engineering and creativity inside the Makerspace.
