Local area resident and Chicago area native, Neil J Thomas, MD, has been named to Forbes Magazine’s list of “Top Healthcare Entrepreneurs to Watch in 2022”. A veteran cardiac surgeon, Dr. Thomas is the Founder, principal inventor, and Chief Medical Officer of Rheoxtech, a Chicago-based medical device company with a life-saving platform that is changing the way the world thinks about treating heart attacks. He was recently invited to co-author a book chapter on surgical protection of the heart published in the Fourth Edition of “Cardiopulmonary Bypass and Mechanical Support” by Wolters Kluwer in 2016 and, more recently, he is advancing his research in collaboration with colleagues in the Department of Surgery at Massachusetts General Hospital and Harvard Medical School.
Forbes magazine describes Dr. Thomas as “driving Rheoxtech to strong academic and industry partnerships” and “powering Rheoxtech to establish itself as the world’s leader in this area”. Dr Thomas is “positioning the company and its growing patent portfolio to guide industry partners and establish impactful regulatory pathways to address new treatment paradigms”. By combining innovative catheter-based technologies with proven strategies in heart surgery, Rheoxtech has bult a platform that not only saves lives, but that reduces cardiac injury and that is expected to reduce the burden of heart failure in the future, lowering the costs of care to the health care system and to society.
A Hinsdale resident since 2014 and nearly lifelong Chicagoan, Dr. Thomas was a summa cum laude graduate of the University of Iowa, an honors graduate of Rush Medical College and a triple board-certified cardiovascular surgeon. The doctor has been one of the most active heart surgeons in Illinois during the last ten years, winning awards for patient-centered care and his overall complexity of practice and outcomes.
With expertise in coronary artery disease, aortic root surgery, including valve-sparing aortic root replacement, TAVR (trans-catheter aortic valve replacement), mitral valve repair, and surgery for adults with congenital heart disease, he was also the first surgeon in the western suburbs to implant the Edwards Lifesciences’ “INTUITY ELITE” rapid deployment aortic valve. From 2010 to 2018, he led Central DuPage Hospital’s development of outstanding surgical outcomes in high-acuity coronary artery disease. Dr. Thomas was invited to present clinical outcomes data at both the European Association of Cardiothoracic Surgeons in Milan, Italy in 2018 and the American College of Surgeons meeting in Chicago in Autumn 2021.
