Salt Lake City, Utah – “My problem wasn’t my parents, it wasn’t my friends, it wasn’t my education, it wasn’t even the weird environment I grew up in. I chose to do drugs. I weighed the reasons for and against them, and I chose them because I thought they would provide meaning and pleasure to my life. I chose them because I believed life was a cosmic mishap and all we could do was to make ourselves feel good before dying and slipping away into nothingness” writes Michael Heil.
His life went from bad to worse as his drug-induced lifestyle began to wreak havoc on his body, mind, spirit, and relationships. In PURSUED (Kharis), Heil shares plenty of stories that clearly show that the life he was seeking was not the one he had found with drugs. He says many young people today are suffering from depression, suicide, and drug abuse because they feel a sense of hopelessness. “I chose them [drugs] because they helped numb the pain of my hopeless worldview.”
The United States is drowning in a sea of fentanyl. Older adults are addicted to alcohol and prescription drugs at an unprecedented rate. The pandemic didn’t help as alcohol sales skyrocketed as people tried to drown their fears. Drug abuse in middle school went up 61% in a five-year period while nearly two out of three high school seniors have abused alcohol. The cross-border influx of illegal and often deadly drugs doesn’t seem to be taken seriously even as more young people are dying from overdoses than from firearms, an inconvenient truth ignored by mainstream media.
Heil tells his story, how he got involved with drugs and what it took to turn his life around. Not everyone is so fortunate. “I had to live in lavish indulgence of my sin for years before I was able to realize that it couldn’t ever fully satisfy.” He decided to exchange his vices for freedom and found that God “drowned him in His love.” God answered his mother’s prayers for her prodigal son. He intervened in a way only He could.
About “Pursued” by Michael J. Heil
We had lit a forest on fire…
We were stoned out of our senses…
My sister was calling 9-1-1…
As I watched the flames dance across the twilight sky, consuming everything in their path, I realized they represented my life. In my pursuit of pleasure and partying, I had ignited an addiction worse than any forest fire. After five arrests, a dozen allegations, a v-squad of cop cars chasing me down center street, and years of worshipping all the wrong things led me to the brink of death, I finally found hope in life. This is a story of how the initially enthralling and sometimes humorous pursuits of drugs, and success cannot satisfy in the way that they promise, but there is One who can.
