Horizon Empowers, a global nonprofit organization, and Habitat for Humanity Guatemala announced a new partnership to improve housing conditions and support family reunification for vulnerable children in Eastern Guatemala on July 5.
The partnership aims to develop a master plan for Horizon Empowers’ Zacapa Micro Community that maximizes its ability to serve children in need. The organizations will work jointly to identify housing solutions for families of reunified children and preventative support for at-risk families in surrounding communities.
“The needs of vulnerable children and adolescents are substantial, and we cannot address them alone. Through this agreement between our organizations, we will positively impact more lives so that families can have full and self-sustainable futures,” said Reyna Locon, Horizon Empowers’ Guatemala Country Director.
According to Guatemala’s National Council for Housing, 1.6 million families live in inadequate housing, comprising 41% of all families nationwide. The number facing this housing crisis is projected to rise 2.49% annually, disproportionately affecting children and youth. Lack of adequate housing is a primary driver of poverty, family separation, limited education access, and entry into Horizon’s care.
Horizon Empowers operates globally, managing the Zacapa Micro Community since 2019 and supporting 50 youth to date through its Rescue, Restore, Empower model of care. Habitat for Humanity Guatemala brings 44 years of in-country experience to advance the partnership through planning, design, and community engagement.
This alliance pursues Horizon Empower’s mission to break the cycle of poverty through empowering children, youth and families. It aims to address inadequate housing as a factor in child migration, unemployment, safety risks, and family separation – thereby boosting the local economy and opportunities for Guatemala’s next generation.
