At a time when rhetoric is all too often taken for truth, the need to get the facts out has never been greater. The Universal Church, a Christian ministry with more than 300 locations, seized on its capabilities and organized the April 2, 2019 “Know Your Rights” panel discussion that drew more than 600 attendees. The gathering, held in Houston, Texas, shone a light on legal, law enforcement and other practical guidelines as it pertains to U.S. immigration today.
According to The Universal Church, immigrants and their families face ethical and emotional hurdles that can make daily living an exhausting experience. Compounded by crushing federal policies and questionable local-level enforcement, the panel discussion took time out to explain the current situation and what individuals living in the U.S. can do to help themselves.
The “Know Your Rights” panel discussion attendees include:
- Moderator Laura Neish, from New York’s Tendy Law Office.
- Houston Police Department public affairs Officer Rafael Pantoja
- Rosemary Vega, who is supervising attorney at the Immigration Law Clinic of the University of Houston Law Center
- Staff Attorney Lauren Fisher Flores with the Tahirih Justice Center
- Gonzalez Olivieri LLC senior attorney Raed Gonzalez
One of the main objectives of this panel discussion was to give attendees valuable information they could use during their day-to-day lives. For example, being able to immediately deploy legal and constitutional counters to what may be perceived as an illegal stop and questioning could make a major difference. SB4, which is a state law in Texas that allows local police to work in tandem with federal investigators, is one example of why it’s so important to know one’s rights. According to The Universal Church, a “lively exchange” took place when SB4 was addressed by the panel.
Another topic of note was the hiring of actual attorneys rather than so-called “notarios” whose legal expertise may be lacking. Speaking of professional help, the Houston Police Department representative reinforced the fact that those at-risk should consult local law enforcement for help with such serious issues. The need for these events is evident given the fact that they’ve already been held from coast to coast in the U.S. The Universal Church has hosted similar immigration panel discussions in Chicago, Miami, Los Angeles, New York, Phoenix, Boston, and Union City, in New Jersey.
