Thinking about getting a rhinoplasty? Here is everything you should know first

What is a Rhinoplasty?

Rhinoplasty is a surgical procedure that is performed to correct deformities of the nose or for cosmetic reasons. It consists, fundamentally, of modifying osseous and cartilaginous nasal structures to achieve a new form that improves facial harmony. When, in addition, deviation of the nasal septum is corrected to improve respiratory function, it is called rhinoseptoplasty.

Performing Rhinoplasty requires special dedication and extensive anatomical and technical knowledge, therefore the experience and skill of the surgeon are key to the success of the surgery. Rhinoplasty is not a short-term operation. On the contrary, to obtain the best results normally the surgeon must take the time necessary to patiently sculpt the anatomical structures of the nose.

Although nonsurgical techniques have recently emerged that promise very good results, the truth is that the most appropriate, safe and lasting way to improve the stoma of the nose is by performing surgical intervention. Injecting nonabsorbable synthetic products into the nose can have unforeseeable consequences over the years, including non-treatable sequelae.

What is a Rhinoseptoplasty?

The nasal septum is a structure of bone and cartilage that, vertically, separates the two nasal cavities. Sometimes this septum, instead of straight, can be deviated in multiple ways, obstructing the flow of air and causing difficulties for the patient to breathe. Rhinoseptoplasties have two main indications:

  • Improve nasal functionality (and aesthetics simultaneously) in those patients who have respiratory problems caused by obstructions due to deviations of the septum.

  • Use the nasal septum as a source of cartilage grafts with which to complement the shape and strengthen the functional structures of the nose. In these cases, there does not necessarily have to be a previous respiratory problem.

Correction of the nasal septum and turbinates can also be performed without the need to alter the external shape of the nose. In these cases, the intervention is called Septoplasty and does not involve any type of aesthetic alteration of the nose. The operation on the septum can be really simple and fast or be highly laborious when the deviations of the septum are large, complex and are accompanied by external deviations of the nose. For the performance of an isolated septoplasty or rhinoseptoplasty, the same incisions that we use for other types of rhinoplasty are used.

Rhinoplasty candidates

The best candidate for Rhinoplasty is one who wants an aesthetic improvement of his nose, not a “perfect” nose or similar to someone else’s. Likewise, patients who present obstructive respiratory problems of nasal origin, associated or not with aesthetic problems, may benefit from Rhinoseptoplasty. However, you should bear in mind that functional corrections and aesthetic corrections are sometimes incompatible. Patients already undergoing rhinoplasty or those who have suffered severe nasal traumas pose a challenge for the surgeon.

Rhinoplasty can help you have better self-esteem, but it will not necessarily change the attitude of others towards you. You should not think that a rhinoplasty will offer you a perfect image or a better relationship with others. Rarely a properly performed rhinoplasty will change your face significantly. Before deciding if you are going to undergo rhinoplasty, think about what you want to achieve and discuss it with your plastic surgeon.

Rhinoplasty contraindications

Rhinoplasty should never be performed in patients who have an active infection in their body, alterations in blood coagulation, disorders in tissue healing, alterations of the immune system, or pregnancy.

Any patient with a mental illness under treatment should wait for the stabilization or resolution of their condition to undergo rhinoplasty. Patients with unrealistic or perfectionist expectations should not undergo Rhinoplasty because they may be disappointed with the results.

Age must also be taken into account. Most plastic surgeons prefer not to perform an aesthetic rhinoplasty before age 18. Likewise, it is important to consider the emotional and social adjustments of adolescents and be sure that it is they, and not their parents, who want to undergo rhinoplasty.

Are there any risks? Are there guarantees?

When rhinoplasty is performed by a qualified plastic surgeon, complications are uncommon. However, there are always possibilities of complications with rhinoplasty, such as infection, bleeding from the nose or adverse reactions to anesthesia. You can minimize the risks by carefully following the instructions of your plastic surgeon, both before and after surgery. Sometimes, after surgery, small red spots may appear on the skin as a result of the rupture of small blood vessels; They are usually very small, but they are permanent. After the surgery there are no visible scars since the incisions are inside the nose; Even in open rhinoplasty, the scar is imperceptible. Approximately, in 1 out of 10 cases it is necessary to perform a surgical reoperation to correct minor defects. These cases are unpredictable and occur even to the patients of the most experienced plastic surgeons.

Results

During the first days after surgery, when the face is swollen and bruised, it is easy to forget that the appearance will improve and many patients may feel somewhat depressed; It is a normal feeling. Day to day the aspect improves and the patient begins to feel satisfied with the results. In 1 or 2 weeks, it will not look like you had surgery. The improvement is progressive and gradual, although a minimum inflammation can be maintained, especially at the tip of the nose, for a few months. The final result is obtained in approximately 1 year.
