Austin, Texas – Oct 6, 2023 – Monday, October 2, at Hotel Ella, guests from various industries gathered to discuss creating a more diverse and inclusive Austin. CEOs, executive directors, managers, and community influencers, along with the leadership team from the African American Leadership Institute (AALI), met to address the urgent need for a collective approach in mitigating the decline in Central Texas’ Black population.
Representatives from tech, nonprofit, financial services, and other key industry sectors met old friends and created new relationships. Mark McClain, CEO of SailPoint Technologies and the event’s host, said a diverse workplace is important, and he is taking proactive steps to foster a thriving and inclusive community. “This is an intricate issue that requires a comprehensive and holistic approach to address, so I’m working with AALI to help create a sense of belonging within all communities,” he said.
BiNi Coleman, co-founder of AALI and CEO of 212 Catalysts, said that while working to transition AALI from a program under 212 Catalysts into its own independent organizational status, it was essential to bring together representatives from a variety of industries to achieve collective buy-in and support. Coleman stated, “As we work to address the pressing issue of the declining Black population in Austin, we recognize the power of unity among diverse sectors. Working together, we will chart a strategic plan and drive meaningful change.”
Austin is renowned for its flourishing population and vibrant culture but has grappled with the consistent decline in the Black population despite overall growth. Beyond gentrification, this issue is complicated by a variety of factors, including historical racism and policy decisions. Corporate and civic leaders alike are concerned about this trend and have joined together to change this trajectory.
Joseph Kopser, serial entrepreneur, and innovation expert was a member of the organizing committee and said it was an important evening with a critical mission. “I wanted to be a part of this effort because I wholeheartedly back AALI’s mission. This event is about raising funds that will help create a more inclusive Austin, addressing key issues like housing, wages, and cultural preservation. Together, we can strengthen AALI and help shape a diverse and equitable future for all,” he said.
