Red Komar is an insanely gifted Belarusian-born visual artist (painter), who is currently taking the world of art by storm with her exclusive art, vivid imagination, and portrayal of contemporary events.

Born in a small village in Belarus, Red Komar had a deep connection with the serene habitat around her immediate surrounding which had a steep, high river bank with a vantage point that allowed one to see a hundred miles across tree canopies. This gave her the perfect viewpoint to sketch an abandoned fishing camp that stood among the gnarled trees as if suspended in time.

Like most other artists, Red, who is promoted by Israeli-based Millennium Art Studio, was born with the innate gift of drawing and her picture-esque environment provided the perfect landscape for her to hone her drawing skills. ”As far back as I can remember, I have loved to draw. Summers on the sand, winters on the snow, and beautiful scenic settings captivated my imagination,” she said. ”My relatives encouraged my craving for creativity, so I painted all the walls of the house where I lived with crayons and pencils. At school, children would draw dolls, cars, and flowers while I captured the whimsical and unusual worlds of my fantasies. As a result, my art always stood apart; in a pile of children’s drawings, the teacher always know where mine is.”

Red notes that she lived a solitary life as a child, so much so that a frail tree at the river bank became her best friend. ”This tree had a human figure. I would talk to it, sharing my experiences and asking for advice. My favorite topics were eternity and death. This was my special place, where I would cease to exist and instead feel like I was flying among treetops over the smooth surface of the water, observing the world from a different angle. I truly loved this place and dreamed of staying there forever”, she recalled.

Red had always had this lofty dream of creating something extraordinary. However, her grandparents greeted her artistic ambitions with skepticism. Their opinions led her to enroll in an architectural school, which seemed like a more pragmatic alternative.

Studying in that school was easy, but, subsequently, Red started to doubt her artistic abilities in school. Since it was not a specialized art school, painting classes followed their own frameworks, which did not fit with her. Red revealed that limiting herself to specific class requirements was difficult, as she would always veer off topic.

 As a result, her work was often criticized, and she rarely received the feedback she initially expected. ”All this undermined my artistic dream and discouraged me from pursuing it. Avoiding disapproval, I would hide my paintings in a closet, away from anyone’s sight. I loved to draw at night, opening my curtains to watch the lights go out in the windows of other houses one by one”, she said.

After graduating from college, Red had to live in rented apartments and moved frequently. She found monotony cumbersome; hence, often changed jobs to fulfill her need for a change of scenery. ”The constant moving led me to develop a peculiar habit of leaving all my paintings behind when settling into a new home. I never signed them and imagined people I did not know becoming the unwitting owners of nameless treasures”, she revealed.

Today, Red has grown both as a person and an artist. She has gotten married and started a family, a venture that give her some joy and happiness. Ever so often, she has operated in the shadows, but, today she has decided to present to the world all the hidden works she had been creating for year, while creating new ones.

 Today, the world can see her talent. So much so that she is a part of the Luxembourg Art Prize 2022, an annual international artistic prize organized by the Pinacothèque, a private museum located in the Grand Duchy of Luxembourg. Every year the Prize aims to discover talents, amateur or professional, regardless of age and nationality.

Currently, Red’s work aims to showcase the countless facets of women from all walks of life, i.e., their playfulness, charm, anger, sadness, flaws, and beauty. It intends to remind women that they can find internal strength, conquer new challenges, and avoid getting cemented in paths that society defines for them. Red believes that every woman is beautiful, talented, and free in her own way. It just needs to be realized.
