Jason Spera, CEO and co-founder of Aegis Software, a global provider of Manufacturing Operations Management Software (MOM), recently discussed the ambiguous meaning of Industry 4.0 in Forbes. Read the full article here.
According to Spera, Industry 4.0 has become whatever a given manufacturing professional wants it to be. To some, it’s data connections to every device in operations. Others think it’s using that data in analytics. Still, more would say it’s an autonomous factory, or nearly. Higher quality, flexible production, lower costs, data lakes, AI, or all of the aforementioned—Like the famous Rorschach ink blots, there is no limit to what Industry 4.0 may mean in the eye of a given beholder.”
Industry 4.0 can reclaim its power to define positive change if the term is accepted as that theme and objective—then a discussion about how to get there can be reasonably had. It becomes a matter of the term defining a major transformation of manufacturing toward the more efficient and profitable, but the digital tactics to get to that end are up for discussion.
“Tactics to achieve Industry 4.0 success all depends on data and the elegance of how that data is obtained and the manner in which it is made meaningful. The approach determines the choice between massively customized toolkits, then how that morphed into ‘apps’, which is just a new means to the same unfortunate ends of silos of customization. Alternatively, there is a holistic platform approach that avoids customization,” explained Spera.
Spera is a proud member of the Forbes Technology Council, an invitation-only organization for senior-level technology executives. Members are respected leaders and executives who are selected for the council based on the depth and diversity of experience in the business development space.
