The consumer price index is unlikely to impact the Fed’s decision to raise rates by a widely anticipated half percentage point Wednesday. But it could influence the post-meeting tone, both in the Federal Open Market Committee’s statement and in how Fed Chairman Jerome Powell describes the central bank’s battle with inflation at the end of the two-day meeting.
Stocks that performed well last week include Campbell Soup (NYSE: CPB) which added 5.2% and hit a 52-week high Friday. Hershey (NYSE: HSY) added 2.7% after UBS analyst Cody Ross upgraded the candy giant to buy from neutral on Wednesday, predicting its strong performance in 2022 could extend into the next year. Dexcom (NASDAQ: DXCM) gained 3.1% last week through Friday’s opening. The stock is more favored on Wall Street, with 65% of analysts giving it a buy rating with an average upside of 2.5%. Evergy (NYSE: EVRG), a Kansas City-based utility company was up 6.1%.
