Nov 8, 2021 – La Mesa Dale’s beautiful new 192-foot playground mural was painted by Grossmont College art students. One of La Mesa Dale’s parents is a military veteran pursuing a degree in Art. She connected La Mesa Dale with her professor, Jennifer Bennett, MFA Art Professor of Drawing and Painting at Grossmont College. Over the last semester, Bennett’s art class developed the idea for the mural and spent 4 days on campus, painting it on the wall. The mural was completed on October 13, 2021.
When staff, students and parents first saw the colorful painting that captures the beauty in nature, the reactions were unanimously excited. Students who walk by the mural on their way to class in the morning campus, couldn’t help but stare and smile. Parents in the drive-through line paused to take photos. One little girl skipped the entire length of the rainbow painted on the wall.
In a day of TikTok challenges promoting destruction, artistic beautification brings joy to the parents, students and staff who get to see it every day. It fosters a sense of pride in our school. It shows students just how much we care about them. It motivates students to be good stewards of our very special campus.
