According to a standard version of history, Europe rejected nationalism and subsequently started the European project after World War II, leading to an uninterrupted peace starting from 1945. Yves Decock pens a piece that uncloaks this version of history as mere fairy-tale.
Liberal Quicksand – A Nationalism for the Twenty-First Century demonstrates that Europe did not desert nor transcend nationalism after World War II but continued and nearly finalized the implementation of the nationalist program based on linguistic divisions after that war. As opposed to what other sources present, the nearly full realization of the nationalist program is the basis for a lasting peace and is an excellent starting platform to build a centrally organized strong Europe. Such more centralized Europe will however never be constructed at the detriment of the nation-states.
The United States of America has followed the European path and has remained an Anglo-Saxon nation-state until 1965. Since then, the USA is struggling how to deal with its multicultural and multilingual reality.
