A friend of ours told us to try the free news app TopBuzz: the news app with headline news, local breaking news as well as entertainment news and funny gifs. They described it as a mix of news and fun. Can “news” and “fun” even coexist? Here are 5 takeaways from our week with the fun and informative TopBuzz news app.
The news is not fun to be around. Mostly bad, seldom inspiring, no wonder Americans are detaching from it now more than ever according to Pew Research. Personally we think they’re onto something. People are tired of biased outlets inciting outrage on a daily basis. Is there a way to stay informed with headline news, local breaking news, and not have it affect us so negatively?
A friend of ours told us to try the free news app TopBuzz: the news app with headline news, local breaking news as well as entertainment news and funny gifs. They described it as a mix of news and fun. Can “news” and “fun” even coexist? Here are 5 takeaways from our week with the fun and informative TopBuzz news app.
1. A New Kind of News Feed From TopBuzz
When we first opened the app we saw a familiar news feed that resembled Apple or Google News. It had the day’s top news from the biggest publishers and news outlets. Pretty standard so far. We kept scrolling and then saw local news reports, and some trending content about sports mixed in.
It was nice to see a variety of hard news stories at first then local and entertaining articles. I read the latest world news, and funny articles, just like that 15 minutes flew by, I’d stopped thinking critically about the app and just went with it.
2. It Knows Me, Not My Google Profile
When you search for something on Google it shows up in every banner ad, or even in the news app reminding you what you searched for. Personally, it throws me off and takes my focus away from my news. The TopBuzz app doesn’t do this, it’s self-contained. Yes, it does have ads, but they’re not influenced by my search history, so they’re not as creepy. I just scroll right on by.
3. A Refreshing Break from Serious News Apps
This past week I found myself using major news apps less and TopBuzz more. I’d open them and scan headlines, but soon after I would exit, I’d realize that I already saw the story on TopBuzz, or that I didn’t like seeing depressing article after depressing article. This downer brings me to TopBuzz’s most positive most Video and funny GIF channels. If you’re into funny videos you need to check it out. It’s like dessert after eating a full meal of news. They’re not making me any smarter, but they’re definitely making me feel better. 😉
4. “So Long Social Media”
I get some of my news from social media, and seeing family members and acquaintances turn brawling over the smallest things just turns me off. With Topbuzz, I feel like I’m enjoying my news without all the baggage that personal relationships add. Who cares what I comment on aunt Karen!
5. TopBuzz Proves News and Fun Can Be Done
After a week of use, my TopBuzz feed reflects what I’ve read and enjoyed. Overall, I really like it. I’m still informed, but I get a healthier dosage of laughs and entertainment. I also discovered the “add channels feature” (it’s hidden behind the plus sign “+”). You can add topics that are important to you that show up in their own category. Some of the content from those channels will also show up in your “For You” feed. If you’re tired of the same old news, you should lift yourself up, and try a TopBuzz.
