A class of fourth grade students at Meridian Elementary School in the Cajon Valley Union School District have their hearts full after an experience that connected them with their community. Their teacher, Tonya Lee, asked the students to dream of how they wanted to improve their community and what they want to change about the world. With this activity, Mrs. Lee sparked the spirit of compassion in her young students.
After this exercise, the students were taken on a bus tour of their own city and were able to see places where their ideas could come to life. The bus made one stop on this tour, to the East County Transitional Living Center (ECTLC). Mrs. Lee’s fourth graders were told that over 100 kids lived at this emergency shelter and transitional living center, so they came up with some ideas about how they would like to improve an open area of yard at the center if they lived there. Slides, gardens, and swings were dreamt up and drawn out in crayon as a plan for the area.
Little did these fourth grade dreamers know that some friends from a local Allstate branch came in the next day and got started on putting to work the plans the students had come up with for a play yard at the East County Transitional Living Center. Mrs. Lee’s class pulled up to the center a second time, this time to see every detail they had imagined for the perfect play place come to life, and the students were ecstatic.
These students from Meridian Elementary School may not live at the ECTLC, but they benefited greatly from this play place being built. The students saw how dreams can come to life and how ideas, when implemented with hard work, can truly change the community and the world. The love Mrs. Lee’s fourth graders felt that day will surely stay with them, giving them an understanding of how helping others brings happiness and joy to everyone involved.
