Michael Barber’s first release for 2019 is Saint Emma. Saint Emma is a song and digital print that revolve around American activist and advocate for gun control, Emma González.
Both the song and digital work of art are equally groundbreaking.
The song is a 6 minute and 30-second hip hop ballad that uses live piano, a bone-chilling cello, and grim but sharp lyrics to touch on the dark subject of school shootings that is seen as a regular occurrence in America. Barber drives home the same message as Emma González which is enough is enough.
Barber creates a vivid image throughout the song about gun violence and Emma González. He paints her as someone who can end the mass shooting era, and he does so by playing on the political right’s fear that she is coming to take away all the guns. Emma González has been both adored and crucified by the media and the American public. The praise or scrutiny for Ms. González is divided much like the left and right divide on gun control.
The song paints a clear picture, but to drive home that message Barber’s digital print showcases the layers of Emma González, her movement, and of course her naysayers including the NRA.
The digital print is a remake of a painting created in 1850 by Adolphe-Alexandre Dillens is The Capture of Joan of Arc, and it depicts the capture of Joan of Arc by the Burgundians. Barber’s new version has González being captured by the NRA.
Barber is selling limited editions of the prints on his website with proceeds being donated to the March for Our Lives. The song has available for pre-order on iTunes and Amazon and GooglePlay. It also features 3 remix versions, and proceeds will again be donated.
