Mr. Barval, one of the smallest artisan wine producers in Margaret River, will be reopening its cellar door on November 19, 2018, with new release wines after a sell out within months of the door’s first opening in December 2017. Established by Rob Gherardi, Mr. Barval has been producing wines for four years now. All wines from the wine brand have achieved 94 points and higher with James Halliday.
Cabernet Merlot, one of the brand’s flagship wines received 96 points in consecutive years. Nebbiolo, another wine from Mr. Barval, has been regarded as among the best produced in Australia and is no longer publicly available, being reserved to a limited amount of trade and those on the limited number of wine subscriptions available from Mr. Barval. The wine has lots of dark cherries and rose with a healthy amount of Nebbiolo tannin. Mr. Barval’s wines are also listed on Huon Hooke’s Certificate of Excellence and have been showcased on menus at some of the top restaurants in Sydney, Perth, and Singapore.
Rob Gherardi, the owner of Mr. Barval, has a pedigree winemaking background working collectively for 10 years for producers such as Cullen Wines and Moss Wood in Margaret River and Elio Altare and Conterno Fantino in Barolo in Northern Italy before establishing his own wine brand. The acronym MR. BARVAL stands for Margaret River, BARolo and VALtellina, all areas with a rich tradition and history of fine winemaking and a strong influence on Rob and the fine wines that he makes. His interest in wine started at a young age. Rob and his family would go to the Swan Valley or Margaret River in Western Australia to pick grapes by hand. They would usually process 3 tons of fruit in his Nonna’s suburban backyard and then enjoy a sumptuous lunch or dinner with the whole family.
At 27, he started his winemaking and viticulture degree. He also applied for his first job with Moss Wood, a winery and vineyard in Margaret River and one of the revered producers of Cabernet Sauvignon in Australia. His first exposure to natural fine winemaking techniques was when he started working as Assistant Winemaker for Cullen Wines, producer of one of the best Cabernet and Chardonnay wines in Australia, learning under Vanya Cullen, one of Australia’s leading winemakers.
Years of working under reputable vine-growers and winemakers further improved his experience and skills in traditional winemaking methods. Rob is a young winemaker, aged 38, but he makes classical wines using traditional techniques. All of the fruits used for winemaking are processed in a basket press, so no harsh elements are extracted from the grapes. The resulting juice is immediately transferred to barrels and allowed to ferment with indigenous yeasts from the vineyards. This traditional way of making wine will enable them to showcase the purity, balance, delicacy, and elegance of the fruit.
Mr. Barval’s wine collection includes Chardonnay, Nebbia, Mistral, Cabernet Merlot, Vino Rosso, and Rosé. Nebbia is inspired by the Nebbiolo d’Alba and Langhe Nebbiolo wine styles produced in Barbaresco and Barolo, Italy. Mistral showcases the white wine blend Viognier and Marssane originating from the Rhone Valley in France. The Rosé, also very French in style, is pale in color with a slight pink hue. The wine has hints of spice and red berries. There will also be a 100% 2016 Cabernet Riserva released in early 2019. With only 750 bottles and 50 magnums being released, it is anticipated that these are unlikely to last long.
