New book "Paint, Sweat, and Tears" by Carolyn Matthews-Daut is released, an incredible account of artmaking and self-discovery over five months hiking the Appalachian Trail

“Paint, Sweat, and Tears: 150 Days on the Appalachian Trail” by Carolyn Matthews-Daut has been released worldwide. This 192-page collection of sketches, watercolors, and trail logs is an intimate look at the author’s experience hiking all 2,193 miles of the Appalachian Trail over the course of five months.

With a sense of adventure and a passion for travel, Carolyn embarked on her 150-day journey with a sketchbook and watercolor supplies in tow, documenting the entire process with beautiful artwork and candid personal logs. From inspiring moments to battles with self-doubt, banal days of trudging to harrowing brushes with danger, the author’s stories from the trail shows the mental and physical fortitude required for long-distance hiking.

Alongside these illuminating stories, watercolor paintings and sketches, each created on the trail, bring the adventure to life. Ranging from maps, landmarks, and landscapes to the trail’s flora and fauna, the paintings bring readers into the journey and add context to the trail logs and storytelling.

Over the course of the book, themes of grit and self-reliance emerge. Not only does Matthews-Daut confront the physical exhaustion of long days and unforgiving topography, she also contends with the sexism and inherent danger that comes with hiking alone as a woman. The entries from each day on the trail track these frustrating moments, as well as memorable encounters with new friends, beautiful places, and triumphant highlights.

Ultimately a story of self-discovery and perseverance, Carolyn’s transparency about every aspect of her experiences on the Appalachian Trail is inspiring for anyone taking on a large undertaking, and shows the growth, presence, and strength that can be found at the edge of the comfort zone.

Paint, Sweat, and Tears (ISBN: 9781960142351) can be purchased through retailers worldwide, including Barnes and Noble and Amazon. The paperback retails for $28.95, and the ebook retails for $3.99. Interviews and review copies are available upon request.
