New sci-fi novel "Inscrutable Liaisons" by Robert Spriggs is released, the twisting story of a monstrous extraterrestrial, a dystopian future, and a web of humans with competing interests

“Inscrutable Liaisons” by Robert Spriggs has been released worldwide. This 220-page science fiction novel brings readers into a dystopian world where the environment has been ravaged by industry, society is fractured, and the blurred lines between humans and artificial intelligence-powered androids have created an ongoing conflict. When a powerful, human-consuming extraterrestrial arrives on Earth, the new hazard in an already dangerous world compels three groups to pursue it, each for their own purposes – some more noble than others.

Set in 2040, with a detailed description of how the world fell into chaos and disaster as a result of environmental catastrophe, wealth disparity, and unchecked technological obsession, the novel paints a clear portrait of desperate times. As the alien begins to claim victims and word of its presence spreads, the existential threat to humanity exposes the true beliefs and intentions of all involved.

On the surface, the novel is about an extraterrestrial arrival, androids, and a collapsing global society, but like the titans of science fiction that have come before it, the deeper themes ask important questions about human nature. Spriggs explores themes of transformation, where selfish characters learn the value of altruism while compassionate characters revert to self-serving actions, as well as concepts of identity, greed, and what it means to advance as a society.

Mariel Hemingway, Oscar-nominated actress and granddaughter of legendary novelist Ernest Hemingway who wrote the novel’s foreword, calls the book “a poignant, thought-provoking exploration of the human condition” that “challenges our very sense of what it means to be human and to advance.”

With several concurrent plotlines, a dash of humor, and a healthy dose of social commentary, Spriggs weaves a tale that covers a broad spectrum of human emotion and digs into the idiosyncrasies that drive people’s best and worst behaviors – all set against the backdrop of a monstrous invader and a global society on the brink.

Despite the characters’ struggles and the bleak landscape of 2040, this fascinating novel is ultimately a message of hope and healing. Showing the inimitable power of the human spirit, the capacity for hope and trust, and the perseverance of those willing to fight for good, Spriggs provides readers with a thrilling story that celebrates the triumph of light over darkness.

From the back cover:

A conflicted extraterrestrial from a dying species lands on a semi-dystopian Earth in 2040 with one intent: human consumption. It holds a secret.

A few groups including two scientist lovers and a pair of military officers pursue the alien for their own purposes. The third group are members of China’s Communist Party.

With the advent of humanoid artificial intelligence, possibilities for android usage expand. A self-serving billionaire manufactures humanoids that are indistinguishable from humans. His purpose is morally questionable.

“At its core, Inscrutable Liaisons is a struggle between truth and deception, greed and restraint. It is disturbing on multiple levels. Yet it provides a window of hope for humanity and our declining planet” – Mariel Hemingway, author and granddaughter of iconic novelist Ernest Hemingway
