Obvious State announces a new publishing initiative specializing in illustrated pocket editions of beloved classic works. The first five titles, THE LOVE SONG OF J ALFRED PRUFROCK by T. S. Eliot, THE RAVEN by Edgar Allan Poe, A NOVEMBER NIGHT by Sara Teasdale, WHERE I LIVED AND WHAT I LIVED FOR by Henry David Thoreau, and SONG OF MYSELF by Walt Whitman released as part of a small pilot and short-run in 2019.
This week, they launched a Kickstarter campaign to facilitate preorders for the next three titles featuring poetry by Emily Dickinson, John Keats, and Robert Frost. This is Obvious State’s third Kickstarter campaign. They are strong advocates of Kickstarter’s robust publishing initiative, led by Head of Publishing Margot Atwell, which is disrupting the way in which books are made and fostering a strong community of readers and backers.
Obvious State has carefully chosen the authors who are not only literary pioneers, but whose works offer profound, ageless wisdom that will benefit mankind for generations to come. They aim to present classic literature visually in a way that’s fresh, exhilarating, and relevant to a modern reader. Each pocket-sized, softcover book is filled with dramatic typography, provocative art, and exceptional language, providing a unique way for the readers to experience these extraordinary, foundational works. They make great gifts for those who already know and love the works, as well as those who are curious about but haven’t read them.
“As a creative studio and small press, Obvious State is guided by creative vision and community. Much of our work is inspired by the feedback from our fans, and this new book collection is no exception. One of the biggest pieces of feedback we receive regarding our literary art prints (which feature an illustration inspired by a snippet of text) is that the art piqued their interest in the literature. To know that our illustrations inspired someone to pick up a book or discover a new author is extremely rewarding. Illustrating larger works in our signature style is a natural evolution for our studio.” – Evan Robertson, Cofounder, and Illustrator.
The first six titles, including Robert Frost, will be available in November 2019. Books 7 and 8 release in early 2020.
