Every year, students at Payette High School compete in the knowledge of the Bard. The Bard, a term used to describe a poet, traditionally one reciting epics and associated with a particular oral tradition, which, in this case, is English poetry, and is referring to William Shakespeare. William Shakespeare was an English poet, playwright and actor, widely regarded as the greatest writer in the English language and the world’s greatest dramatist. He is often called England’s national poet and the “Bard of Avon”, thus giving name to the term, “the Bard”.
William Shakespeare, the great English poet and playwright.
Students have the opportunity to participate in this thrilling and dramatic display of prose, poetry and acting as they demonstrate their knowledge and skill in the subject matter. The competition is fierce and the learning immense. The Shakespearean-inspired academic competition featured a few selected scenes from Shakespeare’s works in a riff-off style format of words, quotes and phrases.
This exciting and entertaining competition is known as “The Great Shake-Off” and is held annually at the high school’s theater. Student from across the nation also participate in this beloved competition each year.
