Plainville, MA – Competing in a world-wide baking contest at only 13-years-old is a difficult task, with the added challenge of battling cancer. Malia Jusczyk, 13, did not back down from either challenge.
Jusczyk, who attends King Philip Middle School, says she loves to bake and is a big fan of the show Kids Baking Championship, hosted by Valerie Bertinelli, who she says is her role model and inspiration. The Greatest Baker Contest is co-hosted by former competitors in the Great British Bake Off, Alice Fevronia and Sophie Faldo, who won in 2017.
Malia discovered The Greatest Baker Contest while in the hospital soon after she was diagnosed with stage four neuroblastoma cancer, for the second time. She decided to enter to give herself something to pursue while battling the disease.
Participating in the contest was not only a test of baking skills, but it was also a test of her endurance through the ups and downs of such a high level competition.
“I was determined to become The Greatest Baker, and no matter how hard my treatments became, and no matter where I was in the contest standings, I never stopped believing in myself,” explained Malia.
Cancer is not stopping her from pursuing her goals. She loves to cook and loves to see her friends and family enjoy her creations.
“The most exciting part of winning The Greatest Baker is the opportunity to inspire other kids to chase their dreams no matter what obstacles are in their way,” she added.
“She is a warrior, and continues to amaze us with her skill and imagination. Her favorite thing about baking is seeing all of the ingredients come together to make a masterpiece that she can share with friends and family,” said her enthusiastic father, Glen Jusczyk.
“She has started her own business called Malia’s Sweet Treats [www.customforacause.com] that has taken off thanks to Malia’s undeniable passion for baking, said her mother Megan Jusczyk.
To celebrate her hard fought victory, Malia plans to have a baking demonstration and offer baking tips to supporters. This special event will be held at An Unlikely Story bookstore, 111 South Street in Plainville on Tuesday, April 12, 2022. Malia and her mother Megan also started an online business together offering Malia’s Sweet Treats merchandise at www.CustomForACause.com.
“We can’t wait to see what else Malia creates, because this shining star is the cherry on top of the competition!” said her father.
