The Weber Dispute Resolution Podcast called The Three Wisemen of Divorce recently hosted a podcast titled Transforming Anger in Divorce: Insights and Strategies with Dr. James Walton, who teaches people how to change anger into a tool for growth and understanding during a collaborative divorce.
Dr. Walton is a licensed family therapist and Eureka Award recipient. He is a member of the Family Divorce Solutions collaborative practice group.
The Three Wisemen show was also selected as one of California’s top law podcasts by Feedspot.
“Together, we explore the intricate dynamics of anger during divorce and offer practical strategies for managing these intense emotions. Learn how to separate feeling angry from outward expressions of anger and why making conscious choices about our reactions is vital for healthy communication,” he said. “These lessons will go beyond divorce and fit any confrontational situation you may be in.”
Unpacking difficult conversations with grace is hard, especially when emotions are running high. Dr. Walton studies personal interactions like these. He takes what he learns and shares it with people looking to have a peaceful divorce.
“Ever wondered how to stay calm and collected? You can do it,” Dr. Walton said. “I can show you how to discover the power of pausing conversations, modeling calm behavior, and reframing complaints into constructive proposals.”
Dr. Walton shares invaluable insights on how feeling heard and validated can significantly reduce anger. Additionally, he talks about the importance of creating a mission statement to guide respectful interactions, both in personal and professional settings.
“Conflict is going to happen. That’s human nature. How you handle that conflict goes a long way to deciding the eventual resolution. If you can tackle these problems rationally and calmly, then you have an excellent chance of finding a solution everyone will agree to,” he said.
While the podcast is about collaborative divorce, the lessons go beyond that. Dr. Walton covers managing conflicts during meetings, employing “I” statements, and the role of curiosity in resolving disputes. The doctor offers wisdom on understanding the underlying emotions masked by anger, such as fear or shame, and how family history impacts relationship dynamics.
“An important point is knowing when to get outside professional help. Sometimes, you need a person with a dispassionate point of view. You need someone without a vested interest in the situation who can see both sides and find a good central path to the solution,” he said.
