Why high demand for ePTFE is a potential opportunity?
In 1969, Bob Gore discovered ePTFE, which was introduced to the world under the trademark, GORE-TEX. ePTFE is produced from pure PTFE fine powder resin. A lubricating agent is added for paster formation, which can then be extruded into sheet form. This sheet is heated and expanded under the proper conditions to make a microporous sheet. The structure is stabilized in an amorphous locking step. ePTFE increases the tensile strength of the polymer at extremely high rates. Since the lubricating agent is extremely volatile, it is entirely removed from the porous structure during processing. The resulting product is 100% PTFE.
The unique properties of ePTFE have been responsible for its use in filtration and medical applications. Currently, ePTFE is mainly used in many medical applications, such as cardiovascular grafts, implants, tool sheathing, endoscopic working channels, sutures, and catheters. Apart from this, ePTFE also finds application in sterile filtration of fermentation feed air, in the processing of gases, and in tank venting. It is used in powder collectors and ultralow penetration air (ULPA) filters. The unique properties of ePTFE are also used in some new innovative products and technologies, such as in lyophilization trays, product isolators, and drug delivery devices, which are new areas of interest for the pharmaceutical industry. The versatile properties of ePTFE are an opportunity for the future growth of the PTFE market.

Why stringent environmental regulation is a key challenge?
Perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA), also known as C8, is the most common building block of the perfluorocarbon family of chemicals. It is used as a surfactant in the manufacturing of PTFE. From a scientific study in the US, it is clear that people living near a facility that uses PFOA may have greater exposure to PFOA. Studies on animals have shown that PFOA can be absorbed orally. Once absorbed in the body, such compounds are mainly distributed in the serum, kidney, and liver. PFOA is linked to cancer and congenital disabilities in animals. It has also been found in the human blood, in the blood of marine organisms, and Arctic polar bears. Such stringent regulations restrain the growth of the PTFE market.
