IT AIMS TO RAISE AWARENESS OF HIGH RATES OF SUICIDE IN MEN AS IT EXPLORES FRONTMAN MARK CHRISTOPHER LEE’S RECOVERY FROM A RECENT SUICIDE ATTEMPT.
Weird The Life And Times Of A Pocket God
A Movie By Mark Christopher Lee
“The Greatest Story Never Told About The Greatest Band You’ve Never Heard Of”
“Spinal Tap Meets One Flew Over The Cuckoo’s Nest”
Weird tells the story of cult indie band The Pocket Gods since their immaculate misconception 20 years ago in a London record shop. It features the highs and lows of being in a “crap indie band” (their own words). From being discovered by late DJ John Peel and obtaining an official Guinness World Record, to playing gigs to one stoned guy and a dog in a scary pub in Huddersfield.
The film also charts frontman Mark Christopher Lee’s battle with depression and mental health issues which have plagued his life since being abused as a child. This culminated in him taking an overdose earlier this year and he’s now determined to encourage others to seek help and support for depression and mental health issues.
As well as starring the band the film features cameos from actor and fan of the band John Altman (Eastenders), 70’s Rock Star Mungo Jerry and narration from the legendary Howard Hughes.
The film also delves into the “Weird” of the paranormal; from visitations by an Angel at a London train station, to the supposed “Curse Of The Pocket Gods” (both Peel and later Tony Wilson from Factory Records both died shortly after discovering the band).
Here are a few quotes on the band and Film:
“Willful Maverick!” – Tom Robinson (2,4,6,8 Motorway, Glad To Be Gay) & BBC 6 Music
“The Pocket Gods make songs about Sex, Curries & Rock ’n’ Roll. Genius!” – Huw Stephens BBC Radio 1
“Genius Out Of The Box Thinker!” – Billboard Magazine
“Quite Good!” – Stuey from the local pub.
“The silence has been deafening about men and mental health until now. Through the language of music and intimate anecdote, Mark Christopher Lee opens the dialogue about depression, family ties and the ongoing struggle against demons real and imaginary.” – Sarah Lowther, Radio Dacorum.
