Philadelphia’s favorite hip-hop, gospel, blues and soul music collective, Royal Giant Social Club are all set to release their latest album titled “My Brother’s Keeper”, a revival of the work and spirit of the honorable Gil Scott Heron. The “My Bother’s Keeper” music album is part of the group’s latest theatrical project featuring a modern radical poet-activist character who successfully run’s for President of the United States in 2020 to defeat an unpopular nationalist incumbent.
Musically, the group also updates the classic works with an Afro-Punk like vibe as they infuse the tracks with their signature Philadelphia sound. In the course of the revival, I hope to breathe new life into to the thoughts and ideas as we look at them with new relevance”, says Meshach Abednego – vocalist and guitarist of the Royal Giant Social Club.
The group has started a crowdfunding campaign on Kickstarter to raise the money to cover the production cost of the album and will be performing selections from the album on their local “My Brother’s Keeper” tour this summer. The group kick’s off the new season with a feature performance at the Good Karma Cafe at the Wilma Theater on Broad Street on Mondays on Memorial Day – May 27th.
The group will perform their updates of the Hon. Scott-Heron’s seminal works to celebrate his life and remember his spirit through music. They’re currently working on updates of “The Revolution Will Not Be Televised”, “Who’ll Pay Reparations On My Soul”, “Winter In America”, “Angel Dust” and “I’m New Here”.
After local performances of the new project, the Royale Giant Social Club will be recording the final studio album at Philadelphia’s Boom Room studios in June for a small audience of album backers and show producers. The success of the fundraiser will ensure that the group is able to cover the cost of recording studio fees, audio mix, and mastering, musician fees for both studio and live performances, photography and video production, as well as music distribution and licensing fees.
