Rupert Salmon, First Black Seventh-Day Adventist Station Owner, Launches “Christian Television-By the People and For the People”

Rays of Light TV on Spokane’s Channel 35.4 to deliver SDA content, particularly by Adventists of color

Rupert Salmon, who became the first black Seventh Day Adventist (SDA) to own a television station when he purchased Spokane’s Channel 35, today announced that the station will now be known as “Rays of Light TV.” The station will present what Salmon calls “Christian television — by the people and for the people.” Rays of Light TV is now the delivery system for content produced nationally by Seventh-day Adventists Pastors, churches and individuals around the country. In particular, it will carry programming produced by Adventists of color.

When Salmon first began volunteering with Channel 35 as a consultant to a group of local Seventh-day Adventist, churches, which owned the station, the idea of buying the station appeared to be an impossible dream a fleeting thought. Yet, as Salmon explained, “The Word declares that, ‘things that are impossible with man, are possible with God.’ And so it is that the impossible dream became a reality in November of last year.”

Originally, Salmon had joined the Spokane Valley SDA Church. His abilities led him to the church’s Audio-Visual (AV) department and eventually to advising the group of churches that owned and operated He’s Alive Broadcasting Television. After three plus years in this role of management consultant, Salmon was taken with an outlandish vision: Instead of simply giving recommendations to others about the best way to fulfill their vision for the station, why not buy the station and institute the vision that the Lord had given him some 15 years earlier?

Now, operating as Rays of Light TV (ROLTV), the station is showcasing the series “40 Days of Preaching, Teaching and Prayer.” This program is on nightly, with the exception of Mondays, presented in collaboration with the North American Division Prayer Ministries Department and the Office for Regional Conference Ministries (ORCM). It can be accessed via Apple TV, Roku, and Glory Star and by downloading the Rays of Light app. As Christian Television, for the People, by the People, ROLTV offers 24/7 Streaming TV. “We meet at the three-way intersection of broadcast television, streaming media, and social media,” Salmon added.

Salmon immigrated to the United States from Jamaica in 1972. After settling in New Jersey, he found that he had an interest in computer programming. This led to a career spent building and developing computers and app development. While he and his wife were homeschooling their children, they attended a homeschool seminar in Spokane, Washington and fell in love with the Pacific Northwest. They decided to make the cross country move to Spokane.
