DUI Defense Lawyer S. Joshua Macktaz is certainly one of the best attorneys in Rhode Island. This January, the Rhode Island Municipal Police Training Department has asked him to help train its new cadets in DUI and drunk driving investigations. Getting tapped this time makes it the second in a row for Attorney S. Joshua Macktaz, as he was called upon in January 2021 by the academy instructors to train three of its incoming cadets.
Recognizing the importance of police officers knowing what to expect in court when a person arrested for DUI hires an experienced defense lawyer, the Rhode Island Municipal Police Training Academy (RIMPTA) instructors have requested S. Joshua Macktaz to provide this information to cadets. S. Joshua has been a RI State prosecutor and criminal defense lawyer for three decades, and the Rhode Island Municipal Training Academy expects their incoming cadets to benefit from his wealth of experience.
The Rhode Island Municipal Police Training Academy (RIMPTA) provides training and certification to police officers in every city and town in the state of Rhode Island since its establishment in 1969. Furthermore, the Academy provides specialized training to police officers from several state agencies with law-enforcement powers.
The Rhode Island Police Officers Commission on Standards and Training (POST) establishes training courses. It sets rules and regulations relative to candidates’ and trainees’ education, physical standards, and personal character. The academy teaches all aspects of police work during the 15-week program.
Two weeks out of the 15-week program are set aside for training on DUI investigations, with a mock trial at the end so cadets can see how everything works in the real world. During these two weeks, they will learn everything there is to know about DUI investigations, including justification for stopping a moving vehicle, standardized field sobriety tests including the HGN, walk and turn, one leg stand tests, use of the preliminary breath test as well as in-station/hospital chemical testing, DUI and Breathalyzer Refusal law, proper report writing, and testifying in court.
At the end of the two-week DUI instruction program, with the assistance of a Rhode Island Traffic Tribunal Magistrate (the judge) and a RI Attorney General (the prosecutor), cadets participate in a mock trial in which one cadet is selected to study and present a fact pattern created by instructors.
Last year, Attorney S. Joshua Macktaz was asked to play the criminal defense lawyer’s role at the trial, and he certainly delivered on that request. When the mock trial was over, Attorney S. Joshua Macktaz was available to answer the numerous questions posed by the audience of cadets about the mock trial they had just witnessed. The Rhode Island Municipal Police Academy looks to have him again in this fashion for its new cadets.
