Top London Muslim fashion designer, Saiqa Majeed, is set to feature at an upcoming Muslim themed fashion show organized by Fine Arts Museum of San Francisco, which comes up in September 2018.
The event, titled, ‘Muslims and Fashion Now’, will be the first major museum exhibition to explore the complex and diverse nature of Muslim dress codes worldwide. It examines how Muslim women; those who cover their heads and those who do not — have become arbiters of style within and beyond their communities, and in so doing, have drawn mass-media attention to contemporary Muslim life.
“Muslims and Fashion Now will traverse different religious interpretations and cultures to range from high-end fashions, streetwear, and sportswear, to haute couture. One section of the exhibition will explore the global reach of Islam, including in the United Kingdom”, said Laura Camerlengo, Assistant Curator of Costume and Textile Arts with the Fine Arts Museums of San Francisco.
Part of the statement from the letter of invitation sent to Saiqa Majeed by the the Fine Arts Museum of San Francisco reads:
“As a leading design house in London, we are interested in possibly including your work in the exhibition. We wonder if you might consider sharing your portfolio with the exhibition’s curatorial team, comprised of myself, Jill D’Alessandro, Curator of Costume and Textile Arts, and Reina Lewis, consulting curator and Artscom Centenary Professor of Cultural Studies, London College of Fashion, so we may better familiarize ourselves with your designs. We would be deeply honored if you would consider sharing information about your sources of inspiration and working processes with us as well.”
Fashion items to be exhibited at the event include Abaya dresses, Islamic clothing, Kurtis, tunics, Pakistani dresses, Lengha suits, embroidered tops, maxi dresses, modest fashion, Pakistani & Indian bridal wears. There will also be a great deal of Pakistani fashion; including the Shalwar-Kameez or Salwar suit many call it.
