Improvements to reduce electric costs by 40%

Schneider Electric has been called on to help streamline energy sources at Travis County municipal buildings in an effort to curb operational costs.

The energy solutions company announced the $27.1 million project with Travis County in a March 2 announcement. The project impacts several county buildings, including the Travis County Correctional Complex and the Travis County Jail.

Schneider Electric has agreed to make energy infrastructure improvements and retrofit the county’s water system to make the county jails more sustainable. According to the announcement, the infrastructure upgrades will reduce electric utility costs by 40%, and water conservation measures could save the county 28 million gallons of water each year.

“The investment in energy and water conservation will not only save our resources, it will free up funds for other priority areas in the County,” Commissioner Brigid Shea said in a statement. “We also know that Texas is becoming hotter and drier. So every drop of water we can save now will stretch our water supply that much further.”

The water conservation measures were designed in response to the 2018 water shortage, according to an announcement. But responses to energy and water issues have remained top of mind across Texas following February’s winter storm that left millions without power and clean water.

The cost savings from the energy and water improvements could be used to fund new technology systems or complete other improvement projects in the county, according to an announcement.
