Tell us about SECOND TERM.
Inspired by real-world political events, SECOND TERM is a high stakes action-thriller that follows former defense operative and single mother, Cora Walker.
Working under deep cover in North Africa, Cora Walker is forced to mount an unsanctioned attempt to thwart a Libyan terrorist attack.
Sixteen years after her heroic actions in Benghazi, Cora is now the press secretary for the Speaker of the House, and a single mother struggling to balance her demanding job with a stressful home life. Her role turns deadly when the lame duck president suspends habeas corpus and begins arresting members of Congress in a desperate attempt to retain power. Cora springs into action to save the Speaker and prevent catastrophe. She must work strategically to keep everyone safe, even when alliances turn sour and her trust in others begins to falter.
It’s an uphill battle for Cora until an explosive finale exposes what can really happen to democracy when political extremism reaches new and dizzying heights.
What inspired you to write SECOND TERM?
The flashpoint for my book was January 6th, 2021.
As rioters scaled the walls and carried the Confederate Flag through the hallowed halls of the Capitol Building, I was instantly committed to warning the nation about what might come next when political extremism leads to violence and rebellion.
I started writing the book the morning after and was consumed day and night with the question, “What if the first Capitol uprising was just practice?“
I wanted to warn readers that this uprising could be a sign of things to come.
How did your background and experience influence your writing?
I walked the streets and talked to people in East and West Germany while they were in the process of bludgeoning the Berlin Wall with hammers and hatchets before the official takedown. Years later as a journalist, I was in the middle of racial protests and clashes between police and protestors. I was honored to cover the United States Air Force at forward air bases in Kuwait on the Iraqi border while they enforced no-fly zones. Shortly after the Terrorist Attacks of September 11th, I was flown out to the U.S. George Washington Carrier Battle Group as they patrolled the Atlantic coastline and the Hudson River in New York City. I also formed relationships with newly formed federal anti-terrorism task forces that were charged with uncovering potential threats on American soil. All of these experiences helped groom me for my aspirations of becoming a thriller writer.
What is one message you would like readers to remember?
The outcome of accepting and normalizing political violence and extremism may very well lead to the collapse of the American Experiment.
The Oath of Office for the Presidency requires the President to solemnly swear that he or she will faithfully execute the Office of President of the United States, and will to the best of their ability, preserve, protect and defend the Constitution of the United States. It explicitly states that he or she must defend the “Constitution,” not the President!
We are a government of checks and balances, not an autocracy or dictatorship. This is important to remember if our nation has any hope of preserving our democracy.
