Shannon Briggs one of the Last American Heavyweight Champions was raised in the rugged part of Brooklyn, New York. Shannon was constantly bullied as a youth, which led him to numerous street fights. Fighting became a natural instinct and after time, Briggs took his built-in aggression and skills to Jimmy O’Pharrow’s Starrett City Club in Brooklyn, New York to begin training. As Briggs launched his career he became undefeated in his first 25 fights.
After dedicating a full year of boxing Shannon Briggs became New York City’s Golden Gloves Champion, shortly after, the New York State Champion, the National P.A.L. Champion, finishing second place as a heavyweight at the Pan-American Games in 1991 and in 1992 he became the United States Amateur Champion. In November 1997 he beat George Foreman for the Lineal heavyweight title and competed briefly for K-1 where he knocked out Tom Erikson (a mixed martial artist) right above a minute in the first round at the K-l World Grand Prix, March of 2004 in Saitama, Japan. Shannon has also won the WBO heavyweight title in November of 2006, knocking out Sergei Liakhovich in the last round.
Alongside his success of boxing, Shannon Briggs has also made success on television and movie screens. He appeared in feature films such as Bad Boy 2 (starring Will Smith and Martin Lawrence), Transporter 2, The Wackness and made a guest appearance on the Fugee’s breakthrough album, The Score.
Shannon Briggs did not completely occlude at boxing (even though he’s scheduled to fight Rampage Jackson soon) or acting. He has also created a brand “Let’s Go Champ.” Let’s Go Champ is a promotion and clothing brand that promotes small but exclusive boxing events worldwide. The brand has grown rapidly and is becoming a major success for merchandising.
