Sifu Maurice Novoa Embarks on a Transformative Journey to Elevate Wing Chun Kung Fu in Indonesia

Jakarta – 18 December, 2023 – In a groundbreaking initiative, Sifu Maurice Novoa, a seasoned Wing Chun Kung Fu practitioner, is set to conduct martial arts workshops in Indonesia, unraveling a larger plan to revitalize and elevate the practice in the country. This marks a significant event as Wing Chun Kung Fu masters have seldom ventured to Indonesia due to perceived financial constraints in covering travel expenses through workshop fees.

Having traversed Indonesian soil for the past 25 years, Sifu Maurice Novoa is fluent in Bahasa Betawi, a language he learned from his local friends. He possesses a deep understanding of the various Wing Chun academies in Indonesia, recognizing that many are at the foundational level of Hog Kong Wing Chun, with proficiency gaps in aspects such as chi sao sports and street fighting, excluding the wooden dummy forms.

Sifu Maurice’s intention is to recertify and propel interested clubs to a global stage. Through the teachings and certifications of his Grandmasters, Felix Leong and Anthony Arnett, he envisions an excellent opportunity for Wing Chun academies in Indonesia. The focus lies on correcting the three empty hand forms—Sil Lim Tao (Little Idea Form), Chum Kiu (Breaking the Bridge Form), and Biu Jee (Thrusting Fingers Form)—as well as refining footwork for tournaments and street fighting. Notably, chi sao will see substantial improvement with techniques derived from Sum Nung and Pan Nam, allowing interested clubs to progress to Sum Nung and Pan Nam lineages in 2025.

This transformative endeavor is set to commence in January 2024, the Year of the Dragon, coinciding with Sifu Maurice’s 50th birthday on March 22nd. In 2023, Sifu Maurice Novoa and Thirza Imbiri celebrated their engagement in Jakarta, showcasing a love story built on genuine affection, mutual support, and unwavering commitment.

The chosen venue for this special occasion was Rumah Kuliner, nestled in the Metropole cinema complex, recognized as a cultural heritage site by the Provincial Government of DKI Jakarta. Rumah Kuliner, renowned for its diverse Indonesian cuisine, served as the backdrop for the celebration, blending Dutch colonial style with traditional Indonesian elements.

In 2024, Sifu Maurice will reside in Indonesia until his fiancée completes her accounting course at the Indonesia Banking School by year-end. This strategic timeline allows Wing Chun academies in Indonesia the opportunity to recertify, crediting instructors for their existing Hong Kong Wing Chun certificates and teaching experience.

The proximity of a 7-hour plane journey from Sifu Maurice’s hometown to Jakarta further solidifies the feasibility of this plan. Beyond spreading Wing Chun lineages, the overarching goal is to support the Pondok Indah Agape Orphanage through the collaboration of Wing Chun academies. Sifu Maurice aims to dispel the notion that Wing Chun is exclusive to the affluent, advocating for inclusivity by encouraging orphans to embrace the practice as a means of empowerment.

Supported wholeheartedly by his Grandmasters, Sifu Maurice has garnered interest from Felix Leong, who is inclined to join him in Jakarta to celebrate his 50th birthday. This marks a pivotal moment in the evolution of Wing Chun Kung Fu in Indonesia, setting the stage for a new era of growth and inclusivity in the martial arts community.
