Silver Wing, Mueller Charter to be Featured at ‘Best Urban Schools Symposium’

The National Center for Urban School Transformation (NCUST) will feature Mueller Charter School and Silver Wing Elementary at the 2021 America’s Best Urban Schools Symposium. In all, there are 19 elementary, middle and high schools to be featured at the symposium, which takes place March 1-4.

The schools were included in this high-powered professional development event because they are achieving outstanding, concrete evidence of academic success for every demographic group they serve, symposium officials said. All of the schools serve children from low-income, diverse communities and none of them use selective admissions criteria; yet they are among the highest achieving schools in the state of California.

Silver Wing Elementary is led by Principal M. Theresa Corona. “Teachers in every classroom emphasize a high level of academic rigor as a goal that every student should attain,” Corona said. “This emphasis has been supported by school-wide efforts to help every teacher grow, learn, and succeed. Our teachers support each other in developing, implementing, and refining strategies that will enable students to understand challenging concepts and master difficult skills.”

In their Symposium session, Silver Wing leaders will emphasize how the school’s Professional Learning Community (PLC) has been a powerful tool for elevating rigor and helping teachers ensure that all students develop deep levels of understanding and mastery.

Mueller Charter School is led by Maureen DeLuca, Ed.D. Mueller students explained, “Our teachers care so much about us as people and make sure we achieve our very best.” Throughout the school, students benefit from high expectations and a culture of excellence. Students, parents, and teachers share an enthusiasm for their school community as the best place to learn and work.

In their Symposium session, Mueller leaders will explain how they shaped a culture in which elementary and middle school students feel valued and capable. They will emphasize how Mueller has helped teachers create and sustain a culture in which students feel like they belong and where their academic and social success is likely.

Mueller Charter and Silver Wing Elementary were named NCUST award winners in 2020. “I’m very proud of our teachers, staff and students,” said Superintendent Francisco Escobedo, Ed.D. “Their success reflects a commitment and dedication to teaching and learning across all grade levels.”

The America’s Best Urban Schools Symposium features schools from across the nation where NCUST has found abundant quantitative and qualitative evidence of academic success. The Center’s Executive Director, Dr. Joseph Johnson, explained, “These schools provide evidence of the potential of urban schools to make a powerful difference in the lives of students. These schools show what dedicated teachers and talented leaders can do when they work together to provide rigorous curricula, ensure relevant instruction, and build positive relationships with all the students they serve.” The Symposium will provide opportunities for teachers and school leaders from throughout the country to learn how educators can elevate learning results for all students, but especially for students who historically have not been served well in schools.

Johnson added, “These schools show us that Black students, Latinx students, and students from low-income families can achieve outstanding academic results, if we act in ways that challenge them, support them, and show that we are committed to their success!”
