XQ Innovation announced today that it will be bringing the same stress evaluations now legally mandated in Japan to the U.S., in response to the rising disengagement of American workers. While the problem of mental health and well-being in the workplace has become so troublesome that Japanese lawmakers were forced to act – requiring all businesses with 50 or more employees to assess all individuals in their workforce for stress – the United States is not far behind in terms of the ever-increasing need for employee health and wellness. According to the Japan Times, over 18,000 Japanese businesses will be affected, and nearly 20 million workers worldwide will now be assessed to determine stress levels.
Employee engagement appears to be a good barometer for the need to assess workers by determining how connected personnel are to corporate strategy, each other’s relationship with direct supervisors & management, and by evaluating each individual’s feeling of personal empowerment. According to Gallup, only a mere 6% of Japan’s workers are engaged at work and globally, only 13% of employees are engaged. By comparison, the United States currently sits at around 33%, but has remained flat for the last 5 years. At first glance, it would appear that the U.S. is much better off – but when 7 out of 10 employees’ feel disengaged, the problem is more widespread than anyone is willing to admit. Without a sound strategy to address the problem, America could be next in line to mandate that companies take action.
