Every disk has partitions, and they are essential for storing files. If we buy a PC with Windows on board, we will probably have at least two, if not three partitions created by default. Depending on the disk capacity, the next partitions can be used, for example, to store media, documents or photos.
About Disk Partitioning
Disk partitioning is one of those activities that we often put off so long that it is finally too late. To protect our data, bays, and keep the disk tidy, better not wait and partition the disk now. Itis actually a simple task that won’t take long to complete, but can save you from unpleasant events.
Why We Need to Partition Hard Disk
The primary reason to have at least two partitions is data security. Suppose our disk is divided into C: and D: the first partition contains the system, the second files. The system crashes, reinstallation is necessary. In the case of one partition, it usually results in the loss of all data. However, when we have two independent segments, we can only format part C: and reinstall the system on it, while all the data from D: will be left intact.
The second issue is multi-system nature. Having two or more partitions, we can install as many operating systems as possible, so we can have, for example, Windows and Linux. This is convenient when we would like to try to work on a different system, but just in case we will leave the familiar environment on the second partition.

How to actually partition a disk? It cannot be concealed that it is best to do it on a clean computer, but if you want to partition your data disk, you should absolutely back them up.
We Can Partition a Disk in Two Scenarios
- While installing Windows.
During the installation, at some point a window with options for selecting a medium appears. In this window, just click on the selected disk and then click Disk options. Then, if the disk is completely new, not yet formed, click New. By clicking on it, a window will appear in which you should enter the selected capacity of the target partition in megabytes, and confirm with the Apply button. At this point, we can move on to installing windows, or use and partition the rest of the disk in the same way.
- Already after installing the system.
If you’ve just installed the system, it’s a good idea to split it up at the beginning. Thanks to this, you can be sure that all downloaded and installed files are safe from the first hours of using the equipment.
The main C drive is installed in the operating system, which is sufficient for everyday use of the computer. Partitioning disk is possible by built-in tools, thanks to which this activity is not only simple, but possible to perform at any time.
