Tech China: Alibaba unveils first cloud computer and logistics robot

Alibaba has unveiled a new robot at its annual Aspara Conference in Hangzhou that it hopes can forever change logistics. The Chinese tech giant also demonstrated cutting-edge technology in cloud computing and artificial intelligence. CGTN’s Wu Lei has more.

Nowadays robots can be found in many different scenarios. Cleaning robots, teaching robots and robots to disinfect the environment and keep people safe — you name it. With the booming development in e-commerce, logistics has become one of the major sectors that needs innovative robot solutions.

ZHANG JIANFENG CTO, Alibaba Group “It’s estimated that in the near future, over one billion parcels need to be delivered each day. In the whole logistical supply chain, last mile delivery features high cost and low efficiency. We’ve been thinking about how to solve this problem with technology,” said in Hangzhou.

At Alibaba’s annual tech conference, Zhang Jianfeng announced Alibaba’s first logistics solution, a robot named “Xiaomanlv.” It’s designed to deliver five hundred parcels each day. With the help of deep machine learning and artificial intelligence, Xiaomanlv can determine object positions to within a centimeter.

CHEN JUNBO, SENIOR EXPERT Autonomous Driving Lab, Alibaba DAMO Academy “We hope to build a robot platform to empower any company that’s interested in automated robots, helping them develop their own robots for different scenarios.”

The company has also announced its first cloud computer, Wuying. All you have to do is connect it to a screen, then you can use it to do anything a PC can do. Despite being the size of a smartphone, Wuying offers high performances and can perform complex computing tasks on cloud, without compromising data security.

LIU GUOHUA Researcher of China Hangzhou, Alibaba Cloud “This cloud computer has enabled remote applications to be used on the cloud. No room is left for the virus, because there are no interfaces for external devices.”

The Apsara Conference is one of the earliest platforms showcasing developers’ innovations. And Chinese companies say they are hoping to make digital technology accessible to everyone, just like water and electricity is.
