McNeel’s love and care for his animals gave rise to this outstanding humorous song. Labrador.A song is sure to put a smile on your face and make you want to dance along. McNeel credits his foray into songwriting to his grandmother who operated a working cattle and dude ranch near San Antonio. Doug notes: “When I was sixteen I worked at the ranch during the summer and at the same time was learning to play the guitar. One evening my grandmother asked me why I was singing other people’s music. ‘Why don’t you write your own songs like your grandfather used to do?’ I was flattered that she thought I had it in me to do this. That was the spark that got me started as a songwriter, and I am deeply grateful for the gift of her challenge to me.” Since then McNeel has been writing songs shaped by the folk, country and gospel influences from his early years
The result of these influences combined with McNeel’s own spiritual insights and life experiences is what he likes to call “soul nourishing Texas-style Americana music.”
