The Chicago Branch of The Largest International Buddhist Organization Celebrates The Buddha’s Birthday With a Siddhartha Festival

NAPERVILLE, IL – May 21, 2019 – For the last three years, Fo Guang Shan Chicago Buddhist Temple and Buddha’s Light International Association Chicago Chapter have organized the Siddhartha Festival. This year, the festival will be held from May 26 to June 23.

This celebration of the Buddha’s birthday reminds us of his teachings of mutual respect and admiration across all cultures, and service to all people, regardless of tradition. The festival is a month-long outdoor event, complete with flowers and Chinese lanterns, and interspersed with a variety of smaller workshops and family activities throughout the month.

Congressman Bill Foster of Illinois’s 11th congressional district, Mayor Gina Cunningham of Woodridge, and Director-General Eric Huang of TECO Chicago will be among the special guests at the Festival Opening from 5:00pm to 9:00pm on May 26. They, along with everyone who attends the opening ceremony, will be able to enjoy a variety of performances such as a lion dance, zither music, Tai Chi, and an original Chan meditation dance. And best of all, all performances, including a dinner box, are free!

Throughout the festival, the temple will extend its opening hours from 10:00am to 9:30pm from May 26 to June 23. Besides enjoying the outdoors decorations, visitors can attend workshops and events at designated times:

  • Every day (7:00–7:30pm): Video on the Life of the Buddha (English and Chinese)
  • Every Tuesday (7:30–9:00pm): Chan Dance, Chan Talk, Chan Meditation (Instructions in English)
