Today, The Discovery House founders, Tom and McKay Whiting, are pleased to announce a $5,000 donation to Bertrand Elementary. This winter, the Southern California treatment center is proud to work with the local elementary school to solidify their continued partnership.
The donation will help fund the school’s literacy program, Accelerated Reader. The program helps students develop independent reading skills and monitors their progress toward college and career readiness. Incentives that are built into the program help increase student participation and foster a love for reading.
“We believe that a good education is an important factor in the long-term prevention of of substance abuse,” says Tom Whiting, co-founder of The Discovery House. “We hope that through the tools this program will provide, Bertrand students will be able to excel not only in school, but in life.”
Principal, Sylvia Guzman, accepted the donation on behalf of the school.
“Through the generosity given, I knew that the Discovery House has a strong commitment to the students, staff and parents of Bertrand Elementary School and our surrounding community,” Guzman explained.
It is important for communities to come together for the benefits of its members. Our young people need to have access to quality educational opportunities.
