After half a century, Stephen King closed his Dollar Baby program, which allowed young filmmakers to acquire adaptation rights for $1. According to Stephen King’s official website, all contracts issued before December 2023 will be honored and will remain approved for one year from their instantiation, as per the terms of their contract.
Mila Safiye secured the last signed contracts with the great writer a few days before the Dollar Baby program officially closed. Mila has permission to make a film based on a short story by Stephen King, “The Man Who Would Not Shake Hands” © (June 1985), from the story collection by Stephen King, “The Skeleton Crew”. The film will be submitted to multiple international film festivals.
By the way, the director of the movies “The Shawshank Redemption,” “The Green Mile,” and “The Mist,” based on Stephen King’s books, Frank Darabont, also began his career in film with his participation in the Dollar Baby program with a movie based on Stephen King’s story “The Woman in the Room.”
Until now, no Turkish directors have ever participated in the Dollar Baby program. Since Stephen King writes books exclusively about American realities (usually the events in them take place in Maine), it is unlikely that movies based on his books will be shot outside the United States. Potentially, The Man Who Would Not Shake Hands will be the last Baby Dollar movie made outside the United States.
