Despite its incredible longevity, the production continues to play to a packed house and tickets to The Mousetrap are still very much in demand. Commenting on this unique achievement, Producer Brian Fenty stated that the milestone was “proof that remarkable storytelling can unite audiences across generations — and endure for decades to come.”
The Mousetrap is arguably the world’s most famous play. The tense ‘Whodunnit’ centres on a group of strangers who find themselves snowed in at the remote and isolated Monkswell Manor, a countryside guesthouse. During the evening, a police sergeant arrives and informs the hotel guests of a murder that has been committed close by and that they are all now considered suspects who will need to be interviewed to uncover the killer amongst them. But who could it possibly be?
The Mousetrap is now the world’s longest-running theatrical production and was first showcased at the Theatre Royal in Nottingham on October 6th, 1952 before it embarked on a nationwide tour. The West End production opened at the Ambassadors Theatre on November 25th, 1952. It remained the resident production at the venue for 22 years before finding its current home at the St Martin’s Theatre where it has showcased ever since. The Mousetrap is currently one of two Agatha Christie plays in London, alongside the tense courtroom drama, Witness For The Prosecution which is performed at London County Hall.
To celebrate her 80th birthday of the Queen Consort in 1947, she was offered a birthday gift of her choice by the BBC which resulted in a request for a new Agatha Christie play. This resulted in a short 30-minute radio drama entitled ‘Three Blind Mice’ which, after a few rewrites became a stage play that would open 5 years later at the Nottingham Play House under the new name of The Mousetrap. The rest… is history!
There have been two film versions of The Mousetrap – but not in English! Russian director Samson Samsonov released a film in 1990 entitled ‘Myshelovka’ (which translates as ‘Mousetrap’) and closely follows the plot of the play, while Premendra Mitra’s 1960 movie ‘Chupi Chupi Aashy’ performed in Bengali is also very much inspired by Christie’s original radio play.
The current cast of The Mousetrap features Grace Darling as Miss Casewell, Richard Leeming as Christopher Wren, Harry Bradley as Giles Ralston, Lara Lemon as Mollie Ralston, Rekha John-Cheriyan as Mrs Boyle, Owen Oakeshott as Major Metcalf, Alasdair Buchan as Mr Paravicini, and Daniel Rainford as Detective Sgt. Trotter, Liv Koplick, Cathryn Sherman, Clive Marlowe, Ben Riddle, and Richard Parnwell.
Due to the seemingly endless demand, London theatre tickets to The Mousetrap remain hot property in the West End and are still available to book securely online from Theatre Tickets London. It would be a crime to miss it!
